General Information

The workshop represents a five full-day training in Linux and ARB/SILVA, with lectures, demonstrations, and guided tutorials.

Participants are taught in (i) theory of phylogenetic analysis and probe design, in (ii) installing Ubuntu Linux and ARB, and in (iii) using the functions of ARB for sequence alignment, phylogenetic tree reconstruction and probe design.

We are in close contact to the ARB development team in Munich and we always use the latest ARB version for our courses. Only up-to-date software and information is provided in our workshops.

Time will be dedicated on day 5 of the course to training to be provided by an EBI guest teacher. This will cover submission tools and methods for ribosomal gene diversity studies, including:

  • the newly launched interactive spreadsheet-based submission tool for raw data from next generation sequencing platforms
  • submission of Opens external link in new window MiXS compliant contextual information
  • submission of interpretations, such as taxonomic clusters and ribosomal gene feature annotation
  • data discovery and access at EBI

The European Bioinformatics Institute (Opens external link in new window EBI) is a centre for research and services in bioinformatics and part of the International Nucleotide Sequence Database Collaboration (Opens external link in new window INSDC) providing ENA, Genbank and DDBJ.

Price and Services

The price for the Ribocon Extended Basic ARB/SILVA Workshop in fall 2011 for each participant is EUR 654.50 incl. 19% German VAT. Please note that German VAT must be included in any case because the service is offered within Germany.

The workshop fee includes:

  • a five full day training in Linux and ARB/SILVA with lectures, demonstrations, and guided tutorials
  • New! On day 5, an EBI guest teacher will train you in sequence submission and related tools
  • comprehensive handouts with all lecture slides and the latest version of our ARB reference guide
  • 30 day basic email support for ARB-related questions regarding installation, sequence import, database management, phylogenetic treeing, filters and probe design
  • coffee, soft drinks, cookies during the course :-)

Accommodation and full meals are not included.

But there is a low priced and very good canteen nearby and we have negotiated special rates in selected hotels for our course participants. After successful registration we will contact you again with more specific information.

Registration (status: closed - fully booked)

Please register for our fall 2011 ARB workshop (October 24 - 28) by sending an email to Opens window for sending email arb(at)ribocon.com with the subject "ARB Workshop fall 2011".

Your registration mail has to include (i) your full name and (ii) the full address of your institution/company which will also be used as the invoice address later on.

Please note that registration is binding!

We can only handle a maximum of 11 participants in each workshop. In case of more than 11 registrations, participants for the fall 2011 workshop will be chosen by date and time of registration (first come, first serve). However, please only register if you definitely have the time to join the workshop and also your funding is assured. Thank you!

If the number of registrations exceeds the number of available places, people will be put on a waiting list according to the order of registration and will be informed in case another participant calls of.

The status of registration will be communicated within few hours, the only criteriom is time of registration.

Payment

The workshop fee has to be paid latest four weeks before the workshop starts (this corresponds to September 26, 2011). The invoice including our bank details for payment will be submitted 2-3 weeks after successful registration (if you prefer credit card payment, please let us know). As soon as the fee has arrived, we will confirm your payment briefly by email.

IMPORTANT: If the workshop fee does not arrive in time on the Ribocon bank account, a written confirmation of your administration is required that the fee has already been submitted. In any other case, we will give your place directly to the next one on the waiting list. This procedure has been introduced to assure maximum fairness for the people on the waiting list.

Cancellation policy:
All cancellations of registration must be in writing and received by us not later than 3 weeks before the workshop starts. A 25% and 50% administration fee will be levied for cancellation received 2 and 1 week before the workshop starts, respectively. No refunds will be granted after the workshop has started.
