Next regular ARB/SILVA Workshop in fall 2011! Extra session on sequence submission and related tools by EBI guest teacher
Finally, we managed to find a date for our next regular ARB/SILVA Workshop in Bremen, Germany. It will take place October 24 - 28, 2011. This time it is not a four but five full-day course because we have added another day of training dedicated to sequence submission and related services offered by the EBI, partner of the SILVA rRNA gene database project.

Ribocon participates in community initiative on standardization of marker gene submissions which is to be published in Nature Biotechnology
In October 2008, the MIMARKS (Minimum Information about an MARKer gene Sequence) working group has been formed within the Genomic Standards Consortium to work on (i) the definition of attributes for marker gene sequences that are most relevant for the community and (ii) how to effectively handle data integration and sequence submission to the INSDC.
In November 2010, the first version of the contextual data (metadata) standard MIMARKS has been released, after two years of discussion with more than 90 experts.
In February 2011, MIMARKS has been accepted for publication in Nature Biotechnology. In December 2010, a pre-version of the manuscript describing MIMARKS has been made available for community voting at (here still called "MIENS").

Ribocon gets project on database development funded within the 7th Framework Programme of the European Commission
As a partner of the multinational project 'Molecular Ecology and Evolution of Bacterial Symbionts' (Symbiomics), Ribocon will develop a rRNA gene database specific for the analysis of diversity and biogeography of symbionts, starting end of 2011. Symbiomics represents a Marie Curie Action organized as an Initial Training Network (ITN), supporting training and career development of young researches in science and business.

New ARBuntu 3.1 DVD released - now 64-bit!
A new version of our automatic Linux+ARB installation DVD ARBuntu has been released today. It offers a number of new features (e.g. additional software for tree finalization) and comes for the first time as a 64-bit system which allows ARB to address more than 3 GB of main memory (RAM), a formerly severe limitation when working with large rRNA gene datasets.
